Our Story
Since 1967
The Beginning
Before Mr. Sid became a destination for luxury menswear, it started with something much smaller: a tuxedo rental shop opened by Sid Segel in suburban Boston in the late 1940s. What began as a family-run business built on personal relationships, tailoring, and service quickly evolved into something bigger. Even in the early days, the focus wasn’t just on clothing — it was about helping people feel confident during life’s important moments.

Building Mr. Sid
What started as Sid Segel’s tuxedo rental business soon grew into something much bigger. His sons, Ira and Robert Segel, took the foundation their father built and transformed it into Mr. Sid — a menswear destination rooted in personal service, luxury tailoring, and relationships. With an eye toward exceptional craftsmanship and a more elevated shopping experience, they helped shape the identity of the store for decades to come.
Bringing the Best to Boston
Long before luxury menswear became mainstream in America, Mr. Sid was introducing clients to some of the finest brands in the world. The store became known for discovering and championing exceptional craftsmanship, including being among the first retailers in the United States to carry fine Italian Menswear. That commitment to quality, tailoring, and timeless style helped establish Mr. Sid as one of the premier menswear destinations in New England.
A Legacy Of Creativity
Innovation has always been part of the Mr. Sid story. From bold illustrated advertising campaigns to memorable seasonal artwork and storytelling, the brand consistently approached retail differently. Whether through hand-drawn holiday campaigns, vintage illustrated ads, or collaborations with artists and designers, Mr. Sid built a visual identity that felt as personal and distinctive as the clothing itself. Creativity wasn’t an accessory to the business — it was part of the foundation.
A New Generation
Barry and Stuart Segel grew up inside the business, learning firsthand what made Mr. Sid special. When they stepped into leadership, they carried forward the values established by the generations before them while also bringing new energy and perspective to the brand. Their approach blended heritage with evolution — honoring the traditions clients loved while continuing to modernize the experience for a new generation of customers.
Looking Forward
Under Barry and Stuart’s leadership, Mr. Sid continued to evolve beyond a traditional menswear store. From expanding the brand experience and introducing new concepts to growing into new markets and categories, the company has remained focused on what’s next while staying grounded in personal service and craftsmanship. More than fifty years later, Mr. Sid continues to grow the same way it started — through relationships, trust, and an ongoing passion for style.
